Welcome to my blog
Hello, welcome to Going to the dogs. This is my blog about gardening and a depository for curious lists, random musings, trivia, anecdotes, whimsy and just about anything else that takes my fancy. However, it has absolutely nothing to do with greyhound racing – it is named in honour of a local landmark and once fine stadium, which is now sadly closed.
Built in 1933, the stadium closed its doors to racegoers in 2008. Apart from attracting those wanting a flutter on the dogs, the stadium has appeared in countless TV shows and in many films, including Guy Ritchie’s Snatch. In 1945 Winston Churchill delivered his final election speech to a packed house, while Blur shot the cover for Parklife at the stadium. It is even part of the local Beckham Trail – Golden Balls used to earn £10 a night collecting empty glasses at the stadium bar as a teenager.
